Assistive Technology Act
The definition of “assistive technology” in the Assistive Technology Act of 1998
is “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used
to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.”
Available Technology
Assistive technology is available for qualified students when appropriate. In order to receive assistive technology as an academic accommodation, registration with the Office of Disability Services must be completed.

Locations
After registration with the Office of Disability Services is complete and the accommodation of assistive technology has been approved, there are several locations where students can access assistive technology. Visit the Office of Disability Services for a full listing of assistive technologies.
Office of Disability Services
230 Fretwell
Assistive technology such as JAWS, MAGic, Kurzweil, ABBYY Fine Reader, Tiger & Duxbury, ERICA, CCTV, ZoomText, and Dragon Naturally Speaking are available for use during testing through the Office of Disability Services for qualified students.
Student Computing Open Labs
Barnard 101, 103, 105, 108, 109b
ZoomText and JAWS screen reader software is available to qualified students in the Student Computing labs. MAGic 11 is available in all Student Computing labs in Barnard except 109b.
Wheelchair accessible furniture is available in 101, 103, 105, 109b.
Atkins Library
Atkins Library has JAWS, Kurzweil Reader, Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, ZoomText and closed circuit television (CCTV) available in the assistive technology lab located on the 1st floor in Room 101C. Zoom Text is widely available to qualified students on computers throughout Atkins.
