What wireless protocol is used?

The wireless networking communication standard supported on campus is the IEEE 802.11b standard. Although other technologies such as Bluetooth, 803.11a, and 3G are available, at this time only the 802.11b offers a stable and mature platform.

802.11b wireless offers 1 to 11MB of shared bandwidth at distances of up to 350ft. Radio transmissions are in the 2.4 GHz range (the same as your home wireless telephone) and offer a signal strength of 100mW. This allows a range of 100ft at 11MB and 350ft at 1MB. Please keep in mind that interference from physical objects like walls, and non physical objects like microwaves, may affect the performance.
